How we designed our own wedding bands...

I finally found out how much Norman spent on our engagement rings and I was completely bowled over. Not because it was too exorbitant but because it was TOO beautiful to be this cheap! I mean, it looked at least THREE TIMES pricier than the price tag he mentioned. I’m not going to say how much it actually cost him but I must say that I am amazed at the price, astounded because my fiance did not overspend on a piece of jewelry which in my opinion, need not cost an arm and a leg. I mean what good will a pair of expensive wedding bands do? What are couples trying to prove when they splurge excessively on two tiny pieces of jewelry when they cannot afford it? I say put the money to better use like a much deserved honeymoon or a downpayment on your first home together… =)

So for our wedding bands, we decided to design our own wedding rings according to:

Material: We decided to splurge a wee bit and get a long lasting type of metal that will remain beautiful for a long, long while… PLATINUM!

Width of band: 4mm is just right for us, thank you very much!

Finishing: Just plain polished is the perfect finishing for us because we simply love its reflective surface.

Design: This is the most crucial element. We decided to go with plain after coming to the conclusion that an inlaid gold band won’t be able to show off the true beauty of the platinum material.

Gems: Norman wants to omit the diamond from his wedding band and proposed that we design one with a square princess cut diamond for me. I love how he could read my mind! More than one diamond is simply unnecessary and I think just a single solitary diamond is beautiful!

After deciding all this, we went to a reputable wedding jewelry store. There, we saw the most tempting display of wedding bands but we stuck to our decision of having our custom made designed wedding rings. I did spot an antique white gold ring that I fell in love with just for a moment but decided against getting it. I drop an awful lot of hints on Norman so that he’ll get the idea and buy me that ring for our first anniversary! ;-)

How we told everyone...

After the initial excitement has died down (and after I carefully kept my prized Neil Gaiman’s first edition and autographed Sandman tome lest I find a hole in it!), we mulled over how we are going to tell everyone, especially my parents.

First we told Norman’s parents. Naturally, being the easy going people that they are, they had no qualms over his son marrying me. His mom was so happy because she feels like she is gaining a daughter (he is the only child, a son at that!) and excitedly went to the den to call every single relatives and friends in her phone book.

Then came the crucial part. I told Mom that Norman will be coming over to dinner and that very night itself, she dished up a stupendous spread. In the midst of Norman handing over the bowl of gravy to my Dad, I couldn’t take it much longer and blurted out: “We’ve got something to say.” Norman stopped midair, then remembered that the bowl was made from breakable material and hastily put it down before he dropped it. Everyone was silent and all eyes were on us.

“Norman asked me to marry him and I said yes.”

I said it in a hurry and in one breath, eyes closed. After ten seconds, I reopened them again, expecting disapproving looks from my parents. Instead, all we got were chuckles and relieved sighs.

“Was that it? Boy, we thought you were PREGNANT or something!” was what Dad said.

I rolled my eyes and joined in the laughter.

After that we told our friends and all of them are pretty glad that we are getting married. “Have lots of geek kids will ya?” Lol. Our “geek” friends even threw us a surprise “Happy Engagement” party and everyone came dressed as their favorite comic book / sci-fi / superhero / supervillain. Now that’s a funny sight!
