A Step-by-Step Guide for the Halloween Bride

by Karen Vander

Gone are the days when Halloween was celebrated with everything scary in mind. Today, more and more couples are choosing to celebrate their wedding day on Halloween because of three reasons – they wish to dress up and have fun, they want everyone to attend by setting the wedding date on a holiday, or they simply love Halloween. If you’re planning a Halloween wedding, but don’t know where to start, then here’s a step-by-step guide you can use from choosing a venue down to your honeymoon.

Consider this – Full-Blown Halloween Wedding or Spooky Honeymoon?

Couples have two options – First, you can celebrate your wedding day complete with Halloween decorations, costumes and favors; or you can just keep your wedding traditional, but fulfill your Halloween fantasies on your honeymoon.

If you choose the safer, yet more intimate path, you will walk down the aisle still dressed in your best white dress but transform into a naughty French maid, female devil, gothic fairy or the sexy pirate once you and your new husband reach the honeymoon suite. Virtually hundreds of Halloween adult costumes are available for you to choose from and buy before your wedding day – you can even pick a theme and play dress up with your husband. Do you fancy a Playboy theme where you’ll be a Bunny and your man as Hugh Hefner dressed up in a smoking jacket? Or would you rather be a naught police woman catching your most wanted convict?

On the other hand, if you prefer to celebrate your wedding with a full-blown Halloween theme, read on for a more comprehensive guide on choosing your venue, entourage clothing, decorations, wedding invitations, party favors, food and other Halloween ideas to suit your wedding day.

1) Choosing the Venue

One of the most important factors that will make or break your Halloween-themed wedding is the venue. If you’re planning to get married in a garden, but you and your groom will be dressed in Dracula-inspired costumes, the venue just won’t match. Fortunately, some creepy venues that can offer you with the gothic feel you’re looking for can be found in old churches and historic mansions. Regardless of the Halloween costume ideas you have in mind, these two venues offer a neutral and gloomy feel that can easily be decorated to fit your theme. All you need to do is look for the nearest mansion or church and decide on which venue to hold your special day.

For your wedding reception, you can check out a famous haunted house nearby and check if it is still usable – this can make a perfect venue for your party.

2) Dressing up Your Entourage

Decide whether you want your entourage dressed up in costumes or not. If you want everyone to participate, then you can make your maid-of-honor the Halloween witch or dress up your bridesmaids as sexy French maids. In the old days, undertakers were dressed in swallowtail coats – you can ask your groomsmen to wear tails. Adult costumes cost around $20 to $100 while those for kids are a bit more expensive, so you can choose from a hundred different themes to suit your budget.

To give flavor to your event, ask your entourage to wear dark-colored gowns in crepe, chiffon or velvet materials. You can even add black chokers, lace shawls or other accessories. However, avoid too much accessories or bizarre items like cobwebs or spider rings.

3) Decorations to Pimp up Your Venue

The secret to a creative venue for your Halloween-themed wedding is choosing Halloween decorations carefully. You can opt to have your wedding invitations, party favors down to your reception’s napkins in orange and black. You can even ask your guests or ushers to hold votive candleholders while you walk down the aisle or throughout your reception hall. Or you can use candelabras as centerpieces.

When it comes to choosing colors of Halloween decorations, stick to shades similar to fall colors, such as warm white, cranberry, orange, harvest gold, yellow and black. Other Halloween crafts, such as decorated pumpkins can also give life to your themed wedding, but make sure not to overdo it or your wedding may look too cartoony.

4) Food and party favors

The good thing about food is you can always play with it to fit your theme. If you’re having your wedding cakes done by a professional baker or pastry store, ask them if they have a Halloween-themed 3-tiered cake that can suit your event. However, if the cakes will just look out of place, then don’t push it. A simple white cake can show off the decorations of the reception quite well, so don’t be sad you can’t have a Frankenstein-designed cake. If you want a spooky feel to the buffet table, you can add a bit of dry ice in the punch bowl and sprinkle some roasted pumpkin seeds around the serving plates.

When it comes to party favors, you can go beyond your imagination and create or buy anything you want. For instance, if you’re after a masquerade-themed reception, you can send away the half-masks designed with feathers and beads as your party favor not only to make your guests remember the ball, but also for you to save money.

Are you sure you want a white wedding dress? Just kidding, I love white wedding dress.

Having a Halloween-inspired wedding is a fun way to celebrate your special day with your family and friends without the formal attire. If you’re ready to be a Halloween bride, then get your brain juices working and plan your wedding today! The next Halloween is just a blink away!

Is it a taboo to wear a red wedding dress? If not, why are so few wearing them. Is it against a religion? Is there a negative stigma attached to it. Red is associated to love and romance isn't it?
